The Nominal Group Brainstorming Technique: A TEDxSydney, Post-it, and Step Change Collaboration

Step Change

Great ideas seldom come from one man. So what happened when 3M’s Post-it and TEDxSydney 2016 assembled some of the greatest minds in Sydney? An explosion of colours and ideas. With our CEO, Ashton Bishop, as the facilitator, the team explored the Nominal Group Brainstorming Technique. Watch below.

The Nominal Group Brainstorming Technique encourages team members to pitch ideas to discover a range of solutions to open-ended questions. Say, “What are some ways we could engage our customers more?” These ideas go onto the Post-its as a way of visual brainstorming. There is no room for criticism here — so imagine the flux of ideas!

After the pitch, the participants vote to rank the ideas. They then openly discuss the outcome of the voting process and build on the results until they come up with the best solution. This is an engaging process that ensures all participants feel heard. The building of ideas ends up fueling the creative process and is a great way of including the team in idea generation. Just think of all the creative and innovative solutions this technique will enable you and your team to have.
